Rihanna’s pregnancy’s are about to affect some maternity norms…

With the recent announcement of Rihanna’s second pregnancy at the Super Bowl halftime show, I like to think about how her influence and style will now be integrated into maternity. Now, there are always other influential factors in the world of fashion. But when one of the biggest stars in the world has these bold maternity looks I like to think about the changes we about to see in style.

Lets talk Bump

The baby bump is supposed to be such a beautiful symbol of life, yet many women are expected to cover it up. Women are always expected to cover up and stay “conservative,” especially as mothers. Which is precisely why I love that Rihanna is embracing her baby bump. In many of her outfits, the belly can shine for a moment. While people have embraced the pregnancy stomach before in everyday life and celebrity life, Rihanna has worn it often and has popularized her pregnancy style. I hope to see more mothers and soon-to-be mothers embrace the bump with low rise, crops, cardigans, etc.

Low rise keeps winning.

You would know I have been a fan of the low rise for a while now if you have read my other articles about low rise and trend reductions (which will be linked below). I think that more pregnant people will begin to wear certain things lower, not only for fashion, but the functionality of being able to rewear certain items. I think more and more women will look for better alternatives for the maternity wear that’s on the market. Being restricted to jeans with bands and straps and large frumpy clothing will become more and more extinct.

I asked mothers their opinions

I wasn’t sure how these style trends among mothers and parents have changed because I am not a mother. So I decided to search the internet and ask the mothers around me their thoughts. The majority agreed with me that they hated the majority of maternity wear, how it looked, the price, and the fact that some could only wear it so many times. My mother for example told me she barely bought anything, she just wore what she wanted for the most part. However, she continued to purchase the necessities she needed, even though they were unfavorable to her style.

Pregnant woman is put aside when it comes to fashion, as if their style fades as they become pregnant. Maternity clothing and the cultural norms for mothers have been challenged, and women seeing Rihanna in these bold outfits while pregnant helps others feel more confident. Mothers can feel more and more like themselves with it being more normalized to wear what you would usually- just with the addition of a baby bump. Comfort is critical in regnancy, but comfort isn't just physical. Its mental.

Brands

I have seen better styles for pregnant people throughout the years, but I can predict that more up-and-coming fashion brands will cater to pregnancy. More prominent brands will also do this or show ways to style regular clothing in maternity-safe ways. Many women have also been buying sizes of their favorite brands so they can keep wearing styles they love and embracing their pregnancy bodies.

I have also seen more people in real life and online wearing cuter and more fashion-forward wear, and it will only grow. Plus with Gen z starting to have children we will see more fashionable ways to wear the bump.

At Khaurafab, I write more than style reductions, so subscribe to the Khaurafab newsletter for updates! I hope you enjoy the read!
